Job description

UNICEF East Asia and Pacific Regional Office is seeking an individual consultant to provide support to Communication Section in developing key public advocacy messages and materials related to the range of child rights and development issues in the region. The role is to support on transition for the initial implementation of the Global Communication Strategy, prepare presentations (incl. PowerPoint), develop simple and direct communication material around a broad range of complex issues including writing and editing content for our website and social media and support public outreach activities both directly and by assisting country offices and HQ.

Work assignments:

With the overall guidance of Regional Chief of Communication, the consultant will perform the following tasks:

  1. To provide effective communication support for outreach activities aimed at promoting awareness of children’s issues and rights and in support of regional office advocacy, leadership and representation functions.
  2. To assist in amplifying UNICEF’s voice by developing background materials, messaging, human interest stories and other materials about UNICEF activities for children in accordance with regional priorities.
  3. To assist in the upkeep and content of the regional website and other digital platforms including social media (especially blog and twitter).
  4. To support media outreach, including drafting press releases and Q & As.
  5. To provide additional surge support to the section, as required.

End Product(s):

  1. Well-prepared written materials and presentations and well developed strategies for activities scheduled throughout the next year, including, launches and activities.
  2. Preparation of press releases, Q&As, stories and talking points in support of major regional activities and events, in close collaboration with Regional Chief of Communication and country offices.
  3. Facilitation of missions to heighten visibility on specific issues, through identification of strong stories and best practices that should be disseminated to larger audiences. This will involve close liaising and collaboration with COs, HQ, and GRO.
  4. Identification and development of materials, photos and research for regional digital platforms

Estimated Duration of Contract: 11 months during 15 December 2014 to 15 November 2015

Qualification

  • University degree in Communication, journalism, or related field
  • Experience in gathering, writing and packaging critical information, including for digital platforms and presentations a must
  • Experience of writing for an internal UNICEF audience an asset
  • Understanding of writing for a general (public) audience highly preferred
  • Work experience with UNICEF, knowledge of UNICEF issues and familiarity with UNICEF style, quality and brand guidelines an asset
  • Strong drafting, research and communication skills
