Job description

Regional Private Sector Fundraising and Partnership, UNICEF East Asia and Pacific Regional Office, is seeking an individual consultant to provide technical support on the set-up of new Major Donor (MD) fundraising Programmes and thereafter advising on Major Donor Fundraising in Indonesia and Thailand.

Work Assignment:

Under supervision of Fundraising Specialist, the major responsibilities include:

 

Phase 1

In close collaboration with the Chiefs of Fundraising and MD Fundraisers in each Country Office the consultant will review UNICEF’s MD lists of existing donors and prospects and its approach to them, with a view to making key overarching recommendations to optimizing its MD fundraising going forward. The final deliverable will be a list of prioritized prospects, a basic MD strategy and plan to be taken forward into phase 2. (NB. Unicef’s Major Donor definition is someone capable of donation minimum of $100,000 in one gift).

  • Review UNICEF’s analysis of its existing donor database for prospects and current major donors i.e. looking at donor giving histories etc. and researching key individual donors. Report back on findings and make recommendations on approach going forward.
  • Review UNICEF’s identification of potential Major gift donors (from outside UNICEF’s current lists of contacts.) Report back on findings and also make own recommendations on approaches to potential donors going forward.
  • Review UNICEF’s current cultivation approach, any case for support, proposals in use and materials. Report back on findings and make recommendations on approach going forward.
  • Develop the terms of reference for a UNICEF specific MD campaign cabinet and identify potential champions (should this be deemed an appropriate approach).
  • Through understanding UNICEF’s work in Indonesia and Thailand (gained also via meetings with key internal UNICEF staff) provide feedback and recommendations on the attractiveness of UNICEF’s current and planned projects.
  • Develop an overarching case for support that could be used to underpin any major donor efforts.
  • Appraise UNICEF’s readiness to deliver a MD programme in staffing structure and competency gap, HNWI volunteers and internal process terms. Recommend necessary changes where appropriate.
  • Highlight general and country specific issues to be aware with regards to the appropriateness of donors, and identify particular risk factors, and suggest sources of information, and processes for the due diligence screening process.
  • Identify an initial “top ten” wish-list of donors and prospects from the Ultra High Net Worth (UHNW) segment ( $50 million in assets and above) where a close affinity and propensity to give to UNICEF can be identified, with accompanying short donor snapshots (including associated foundations and businesses where relevant.)

 

Phase 2

Working within the framework of the above defined Strategy and outlined plan from the first phase and closely with the Chief of Fundraising and MD Fundraiser:

  • Support in the creation and delivery of robust, well rounded and attractive propositions/proposals related to the above case statement which can be delivered to Major Donor (MD) and High Net Worth Individuals (HNWI.)
  • Cross-reference specific donors (from Phase 1 donor cluster identified) who might make a significant contribution to these identified activities.
  • Develop cultivation plans, ask approaches, and feedback framework for identified MD and potential MDs.
  • Identifying (if and where appropriate) individuals who might form part of a MD volunteer Campaign Cabinet.
  • Train the MD Fundraiser and other UNICEF staff as appropriate on MD fundraising with the aim of building UNICEF’s internal capacity.
  • Provide coaching on vis-à-vis the Strategy and Plan delivered in Phase 1.
  • Provide regular appraisals vs. delivery of key miles stones as identified in the plan.

 

End Product:

  • A basic MD and HNWI Strategy and Plan/Road Map documents for UNICEF Indonesia and Thailand including clear and defined steps to be carried out in phase two.
  • Report detailing the key points and findings on all the above with recommendations documented.

 

Estimated Duration of Contract:  6 months per country

  • Indonesia:  1st October 2014  - 31st March 2015
  • Thailand:  1st January 2015 - 30th June 2015

 

Official Travel:

  • Indonesia:  4 trips to Jakarta (estimated to 2 days each trip)
  • Thailand:  4 trips to Bangkok (estimated to 2 days each trip)

Qualification

  • University degree in social sciences with relevant work experience
  • Extensive experience in fundraising with specific reference to setting up and managing fundraising from Major Donors and HNWI. Experience of fundraising from Major Donors and HNWI in Asia required with particular reference to Indonesia and Thailand.
  • Minimum 3 years relevant professional experience in the field.
  • Excellent inter-personal an communication skills at different levels
